The Belarusian Electoral Code may be amended during the ‘modernization of the Constitution’, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission, said on Monday.
The official disclosed the information above when she was explaining OSCE PA Kent Harsted why they had not made the planned amendments to the electoral legislation. Harsted is in Minsk on an official visit.
“Perhaps, it is not very not very appropriate to explain the actions of others, but I tried to explain it to him just the way I understand it. Firstly, meeting with Harsted and other representatives of the OSCE PA in July, the head of state said they should not press us for the modernization of our legislation, democratization; he stressed that we would go our own way. In addition, talking to me and other people, the President said that we needed to keep our Constitution current in some way. Amending the Constitution also provides for the change in the electoral system. So, I think the head of state took a breakfor reflection,” Yarmoshyna told tut.by.
The CEC Chairperson did not specify which ‘modernization’ was the case.
