The head of Belarus said this during a meeting with the Prime Minister of Latvia Maris Kucinskis on February 8, belta.by writes.
“This power plant is Belarusian. We are moving towards globalization, borders are increasingly eroding. The time will come when this will be a shared asset of Belarus and Latvia,” Alyaksandr Lukashenka said.
Lukashenka also thanked the Latvian side for its lack of criticism in connection with the construction of the nuclear power plant near Astravets.
“We will build the station anyway. We are building it on the principles of international law. And I often say: let’s think together how to use it,” the Belarusian leader suggested.
According to Lukashenka, Belarus is interested in the safety of its nuclear power plant more than other countries are.
We are responsible for this. For some reason, NPPs are built everywhere, and no one is particularly indignant about it. Russia is building a sea of such plants and blocks around the world. Therefore, we will build it, and we need to derive mutual benefits from this,” Lukashenka summed up.
Incidentally, Lithuania plans to block import of the electric power from BelNPP and intends to agree on uniform principles of the electric power delivery from the third countries with Estonia, Latvia, and Poland.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant will start operating at full capacity in 2020.
During the construction of BelNPP, several incidents occurred: two workers were killed, the reactor shells were damaged during transportation.
