Lukashenka: Some ministers, officials venture too far

Control has been tightened over the work of top officials, in particular, ministers and people in government, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said on Thursday after announcing a number of personnel decisions.

“Pay attention that everything is fair and decent. We have been strengthening control over the work of persons in charge, in particular, members of the government and ministers, because some of them have got pretty brazen. Such persons are immediately rebuffed,” Lukashenka stressed when he was appointed Vitaly Drozhzha new Forestry Minister.

According to him, Vitaly Drozhzha’s advantage is a sort of newcomer among the Forestry Ministry’s top officials.

“You are not tied to any circles. You have not gone finishing or hunting with anyone here. This is why you have a clean reputation and good experience. Act and don’t look around. If anyone wants to get you into something wrong, please find an opportunity to inform me about it. By no means should you ever join some schemes. Everything should be honest. I would like you to use to your advantage the fact that you do not owe anything to anyone and are not tied to anyone. This job will not be easy. You know well my attitude to nature and forest,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka as saying.

Over the recent years, there have been a number of high-profile scandals in the field of forestry. In February, twelve Forestry Ministry officials and the then head of the forestry industry in Vitsebsk regio, were detained by the KGB on the charges of corruption. At the same time, Lukashenka dismissed Minister Mikhail Amelyanovich for ‘not taking effective measures to combat corruption and economic crime’.
