Lukashenka set to come to terms with Putin

Russia and Belarus do have some unresolved issues, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Friday’s press conference for Russian journalists in Minsk.

At the same time, he is set to tackle all the problems soon. A week ago, the two leaders publicly argued over the gas price Russia set for Belarus. Moreover, Russia’s tax maneuver is likely to result in Belarus’ losing BYN 630 mln in 2019,

“Unfortunately, we still have some issues. My Russian counterpart and I will try to settle them will together with my Russian colleague will try to solve them in the nearest time,” Lukashenka said.

He called on journalists not to overhype the dispute between Belarus and Russia. “These are routine issues. There has never been a situation when we failed to find a compromise,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

According to him, Russia remains a strategic partner and ally of Belarus. He espressed readiness to further develop the integration with Russia, but in return for ‘ironclad’ fulfillment of all the agreements reached.

“Belarus’ stance on integration is unchanged,” he added.

On December 7, the Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Putin and Lukashenka had agreed to hold a bilateral meeting by the beginning of 2019.

A day before, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russia was ready to further deepen integration with Belarus, which many perceived as a threat to the country’s sovereignty.
