Lukashenka opens ultra-expensive Supreme Court building in Minsk

President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has taken part in the official inauguration of a new building of the Supreme Court in Minsk on April, 5.

The Belarusian leader was given a tour of the new building of the Supreme Court, saw its halls and offices, the presidential press service reports.

According to him, the opening of the new building of the Supreme Court is a landmark event not only for the judicial system, but for the entire country as well.

“It symbolizes the authority of the judiciary. That is the way the palace of justice should look like,” Lukashenka said.

He admitted that a lot of money was spent on the construction and arrangement of the palace. “I would like get the most out of it,” he stressed.

Making a speech at today’s meeting to discuss the activity of general courts, he urged the participant to treat citizens with justice, touched on issues of confronting corruption, training judges and judicial independence.

As of the beginning of 2019, $51 mln of taxpayers’ money were spent on the would-be building of the Supreme Court. According to the financial estimate, its total value may reach $77 mln.

The emblem and the inscription on the facade – The Supreme Court of the Republic of Belarus – cost the state about $ 112,000. Given that half of the sum was paid for the emblem, the price for every letter amounted to $ 2,000. A crystal chandelier in the lobby was purchased for about $ 90,000, some art pieces – for $ 830,000 (!). There will also be VIP toilets and a fountain at the cost of $ 300,000.
