Lukashenka dismisses two ministers for failing to take proper anti-corruption measures

The head of Belarus has dismissed the Minister of Forestry, Mikhail Amelianovich, and the Minister of Sport and Tourism, Alyaksandr Shamko, for not taking effective measures to combat corruption and economic violations in subordinate organizations, the press service of Lukashenka informs.

The situation was commented on by the head of the presidential administration Natallia Kachanava. She noted that “any such fact inflicts irreparable damage to the image of the authorities and public relations in the state.”

“Leaders, whose subordinate organizations have similar facts, will have the most harsh but fair measures applied to them, including removal from office,” Kachanava stressed.

Last year, 1922 cases of bribery were recorded in Belarus. This is one and a half times more than a year earlier. And in 2016, the Ministry of Internal Affairs also noted the growth of corruption crimes by 12.8%.

Last year, a number of major Belarusian officials were detained on charges of taking bribes. Among them were deputy general director of the BelAZ plant, the head of the transport inspection of the Ministry of Transport, the former chairman of the Salihorsk district executive committee, as well as heads of municipal enterprises from the Minsk, Vitsebsk and Mahiliou regions.

The author of the anti-corruption report, Syarhei Antonchyk, says, however, that Lukashenka needs corruption.
