In the course of Thursday’s discussing the epidemiological situation, President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has given the reasons for not imposing quarantine measures in Belarus.
“Everyone who returns from abroad are under medical observation. As soon as they start coughing or sneezing, upon a slightest suspicion, these people should take tests. We immediately start tracing and isolating their contacts. I have analysed some facts – in the situations when we quarantined people just to play safe, it turned out that none of them was sick. Everyone was healthy,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.
According to the Belarusian leader, it is the Chinese comrades who advised him not to put the country on lockdown.
“The Chinese also tell us that it makes no sense to impose an excessive quarantine. Our experience has proved – three thousand people were under medical surveillance and these three thousand people were healthy,” he stressed.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka failed to approve the idea to earlirise school holidays and place educational institutions under quarantine. In his opinion, such measures would only aggravate the situation, because the children who may be carriers of the novel coronavirus will go and visit their grandparents at this time. And older people, on the contrary, are at risk, he said.
“But if you, parents, are afraid of [your children’s getting infected], do not to send them to school, we do not forbid that,” Lukashenka noted.
In addition, he recommended Belarusian citizens stay at home if possible.
As reported earlier, Alyaksandr Lukashenka also blasted a number of countries for shutting down their borders, calling the measure ‘utter nonsense’.
Last week, the Belarusian Health Ministry said that the closure of the border was unable to prevent the entry of coronavirus, as ‘7 out of 8 cases of imported coronavirus infection were found precisely among the Belarusian citizens, returning to their homeland from abroad’. As for the possibility of shutting down kindergartens and primary schools over the virus, the ministry stresses that children get sick much less often and do not die of coronavirus at all.
