Leader of self-proclaimed Transnistria escapes after being accused of embezzlement

The former head of Transnistria Yevgeny Shevchuk secretly left the unrecognized republic overnight into Wednesday.

On June 28, the Supreme Council stripped Shevchuk of immunity upon the demand of prosecutor Anatoly Guretsky who asked Transnistrian deputies to okay bringing the former head into the proceedings.

A criminal case over large-scale theft of public funds was opened, the prosecutor.

“According to our information, Yevgeny Shevchuk crossed the Dniester river at night on a floating craft and left the territory of the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic after receiving the message about the meeting of the Parliament from the Chairman of the Supreme Council,” parliamentary speaker Alexander Sherbo said.

Yevgeny Shevchuk was at the helm of the self-proclaimed republic in 2011-2016.
