Latvia builds 93 km barbed wire fence on border with Russia

The construction of a 93-kilometer long fence with barbed wire has been completed on the Latvian-Russian border. The height of the fence in some parts of the border reaches 2.7 meters.

It is planned to strengthen and modernize 282.6 km of the Latvian-Russian border. The construction project included the creation of patrol tracks, control lanes and a fence with barbed wire. Total construction costs will amount to 21 million 168 thousand euros.

The border security analysis showed that in areas where a new barbed wire fence had been installed, the number of violations had significantly decreased. It was decided to build another 100 kilometers of fence. This will additionally require another 5.6 million euros. However, these funds have not yet been allocated from the state budget of Latvia.
