Kurapaty defenders heavily fined


Activists Maya Navumava, Volha Nikalaichyk and Leanid Kulakou have been tried today in Tsentralny district court of Minsk.

As reported earlier, Kurapaty defenders started a boycott of businesses linked to the owners of the notorious restaurant Let’s Go And Eat. Three activists, who attempted to picket Grand Kushavel restaurant in Minsk, were detained on Thursday. The picket lasted just a few minutes.

Politician Pavel Sevyarynets announced the boycott on Wednesday.

The case of Nikalaichyk was considered by judge Viktoryia Shabunya. According to the protocol, she handed out leaflets, Volha claims that she did not even have time to distribute a single one. She added that there were no picketing attributes, no slogans.

Two riot policemen, Dzmitry Korzhyk and Andrey Kampaniyets were the witnesses during the trial.

Volha Nikalaichyk was BYN 980 fined; the same fine was imposed on Navumava by judge Khoma, Leanid Kulakou got a fine of BYN 1,102.

Kurapaty defenders keep protesting against ‘dancing on the bones’, i.e. opening the restaurant Let’s Go And Eat in the vicinity of the mass grave. Activists first asked the authorities to interfere with the situation, and then decided to act independently. They are trying not to let cars to the territory of the restaurant.

Kurapaty, a place on the outskirts of Minsk, is not just the national memorial and a mass grave of the victims of Stalinist repression; since 1993, it has been is a site of historical and cultural heritage. According to historians, 100,000 – 250,000 persons might have been killed there.
