Killed only in enemies' dreams. Prominent Russian journalist Babchenko still alive

Arkady Babchenko has appeared at today’s briefing of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU).

As reported earlier, he was shot in the back near his block of flats in Dniprovski district in Kyiv and later died in an ambulance on the way to a hospital.

His ‘murder’ turns out to have been staged: the SBU carried out a special operation to catch persons who were a threat to the journalist.

At the beginning of the briefing, the special service claimed that the organiser of the crime had been arrested in Kyiv. But then a surprise came…

“Of course, now I should have expressed my deep condolences to Arkady Babchenko’s family, but I will not do it. On the contrary, I want to congratulate his family, you all, our whole world that is watching this act, and congratulate Arkady Babchenko on his third birthday,” SBU Chief Vasyl Hrytsak said when Babchenko appeared in the company of Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko.

The special operation helped thwart a ‘cynical provocation and document the plotting of a shameful crime by the Russian special services’, Ukrinform quoted Hrytsak.

According to the SBU, a criminal who was to have killed Babchenko intended to leave Ukraine, he already had a return ticket. He was also tasked with buying weapons and ammunition.

“I would like to apologise to all of you for what you had to go through. I had to bury my colleagues many times and I know that feeling, I know what it means. I am sorry for making you go through it. But there was no other option,” Babchenko said at the briefing.

After Ukraine’s Security Service received information about the brewing murder of Babchenko, they decided to save the journalist by conducting a special operation. The journalist participated in its preparation himself. A killer was reportedly promised $30,000 for his head. According to the Ukrainian side, the Russian special services recruited the would-be committer, a former member of the Anti-Terrorist operation in Donbas, with the help of a linkman in Ukraine. The intermediary was arrested three hours earlier, Hrytsak said.

Babchenko also begged his family for pardon and thanked SBU for saving his life.

“I did my job, I am still alive. I won’t give them such satisfaction!” he said.
