‘Kids unable to fire grenade’. Russia MP pushes for basic military training in schools

Viktor Bondarev, a Russian senator and three-star general, has put forward with an initiative to restore basic military training (‘NVP’) in schools.

“Why was NVP removed from schools? Do you realize that a pacifist will never be able to defend their homeland? No one has ever defended their country with the help of poems or a brush and will not defend <…> I mean, we should introduce [basic military training] it now,” Bondarev, Chairman of the parliamentary committee on defense and security, said during the meeting with Education Minister Olga Vasilyeva.

According to him, it is the pacifists who insisted on reducing the army service term to one year.

“A kid is afraid of an assault rifle, they do not know what a grenade is and hom to launch it. Is it normal?” the top military official stressed.

Senior formers may study ‘certain divisions’ of basic military training when attending health and safety training course, Olga Vasilyeva believes.
