KGB raids customs: arrests, criminal cases and seized cash

The State Security Committee uncovers “large-scale duty evasion scheme”. Goods were smuggled into Belarus from Lithuania via Kamenny Log.

According to the KGB, the criminal group included current and former employees of Customs.

Depending on the amount of smuggling, they accepted bribes ranging from $250 to $1,000.

Another customs officer had a permanent “salary” of $1,000 per month for promptly informing the criminals about the planned inspections.

The KGB has detained 19 persons, including those who gave bribes. “In the course of investigatin activities, the total amount of more than $2.2 million in cash was seized from the defendants’ homes,” the press service of the State Security Commitee reports.
