KGB chair: We exposed 11 foreign agents in 2017

The KGB chairman Valery Vakulchyk spoke about the results of his service’s struggle with foreign intelligence services in 2017. According to him, the activity of 11 agents and foreign special services staff was stopped, and 4 criminal cases were opened.

The names of agents and details of espionage affairs were not disclosed.

“Last year there were also trials of Belarusian citizens spying for the benefit of other states. All were sentenced to significant prison terms, the smallest being 8 years. A former high-ranking serviceman received 14 years. Another person involved in such case was sentenced to 11 years,” Vakulchyk told BelTA.

The KGB chairman highly appreciated the work of the Belarusian counterintelligence.

“Cases related to espionage are a very delicate work that requires a lot of strength. Sometimes, you have to wait for years to get result. We began to document one of the spy crimes, for example, back in 2008, and we detained the spy, a foreign intelligence officer, only eight years later,” he said.
