It’s up to Donbas republics to decide. Kremlin about Lukashenka’s proposal to send peacekeepers
The leaders of separatist groups have the right to decide on their own how to control the situation and the territory of the Russian-Ukrainian border during the elections in Donbas, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov believes.
“The case is that there is the leadership in the territory of Donbas. These are two republics, that, first and foremost, should set such control regime that they consider appropriate and possible. The decision should be made by the leaders of the two republics,” he said, commenting on Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s recent proposal to send Belarusian peacekeepers to Donbas.
According to him, the issue of the Ukrainian-Russian border control should be tackled the same way:
“Again, one should see the position of leadership of the two republics of Donbas, whether they are ready to accept and implement such an initiative. As far as I understand, this initiative has not been discussed, we do not know the stances by the countries concerned.”
When asked whether Russia would agree to Belarusian peacekeepers’ coming, Peskov said he did not give a clear-cut answer when being ignorant of Donbas militants’ plans.
Peskov also assured journalists that Lukashenka had never discussed his initiative with Vladimir Putin.
On October 31, when making a speech at the Munich Security Conference Core Group meeting in Minsk, Lukashenka stressed that a mutually acceptable solution on bringing peacekeepers into Donbas should be found as soon as possible. Belarus is ready to take responsibility for ensuring peace in eastern regions of Ukraine and exerting control over the Russian-Ukrainian border, as well as assist holding elections in Donbas, he stated.
