Interior Minister Shunevich promised to create more enterprises employing former prisoners

Ihar Shunevich, Belarus Interior Minister, and Aleh Matkin, head of the Department for the Execution of Punishments of the MIA, have visited the agricultural enterprise Khutar-Ahra (Homiel region) where former prisoners work.

In August 2017, Ihar Shunevich said that there were plans to create a specialized agricultural enterprise for employment of former prisoners within the existing penal system. The minister’s initiative was seen as controversial in the society. The enterprise began operating in January 2018.

“Now this is our unit, I call it the “First police unit with an agricultural bias”. Today, about 30 people are employed here, who are in a medical-labor dispensary or have been released from prison. This is certainly a small amount, but we will increase it,” he said.

Minister Shunevich announced the construction of new facilities and the enlargement of production:

“I think that this will be a fully-fledged campaign to create such enterprises. In any case, even the needs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in terms of agricultural products are much bigger than the capabilities of this agro-facility. “

The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasizes that work at such facilities will be exclusively voluntary.

“We will employ here those who will want to work,” the minister said.

Minister Shunevich promised to create in the future “ideal conditions for work and life”.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs notes that the practice of creating farm type enterprises like Khutar-Ahra will expand. It is also possible that this initiative will be supported by other law enforcement agencies.
