Independence, NPP and elections: Belarus on EP’s radar


On January 23, the Belarusian issue was discussed in the European Parliament, Ales Silich, a Belsat correspondent in Brussels, reports.

The discussion took place on the initiative of Petras Austrevicius, the EP special rapporteur on Belarus. MEPs, representatives of the European Commission, political scientists, journalists, members of Ukrainian organizations showed up at at the event.

The Belarusian side was represented by Anatol Lyabedzka (the European Dialogue), Iryna Sukhiy (NGO Ecohome), Volha Karach (the initiative Nash Dom) and Ales Silkou (the Right of Choice campaign).

During the hearings, three main issues were in focus: the construction of the nuclear power plant in Astravets, the recent parliamentary elections as well as the future of Belarus’ independence amid the deepening of integration with Russia.

Following the discussion, no resolutions were adopted.
