IAEA mission gives Belarus seven recommendations

The work of the IAEA Integrated Assessment Mission on the development of the national nuclear energy infrastructure resulted in seven general recommendations to the Belarusian authorities, Deputy Director General of the agency Mikhail Chudakov, Interfax-Zapad reports.

On March 4, Deputy Director General of the IAEA Mikhail Chudakov met with Prime Minister of Belarus Syarhei Rumas.

“The first unit of the NPP is almost ready for commissioning,” stated the representative of the agency during the meeting. “It is in good condition, which is confirmed by our infrastructure inspection which has resulted in seven general recommendations for the country and five positive experiences that other countries could use at home”.

Nothing has been reported on the content of the recommendations.

Chudakov noted the active cooperation of Belarus with the IAEA. “We hold our relationship with Belarus as an example,” said the representative of the agency, noting that the state invites all the IAEA missions, despite the fact that they are not mandatory.

Chudakov said that the IAEA has no “technical claims to the nuclear power plant,” BelTA informs. “Belarus meets all the requirements of the IAEA,” he stressed.

According to the press service of the government, Rumas stressed that the absolute priority of the BelNPP construction project remains to ensure the safety of the plant.

“The most important thing for us is strict compliance with all international obligations in the nuclear field and adherence to all standards and recommendations of the IAEA. The results of the IAEA assessment missions are an important reference point for us,” the prime minister added.
