‘I had a dream’. Lukashenka wants Belarusians to drive home-produced Geely cars

Belarusians should drive cars which are made in Belarus, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said after the official opening of Bel Gee car factory on Friday.

“Our friends responded to my request and helped to set up this wonderful factory. They have also given a loan. Therefore, first of all I would like to say that my dream to produce a car in Belarus has come true,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka.

In particular, the Belarusian leader is going to thank the government of the People’s Republic of China, particularly China President Xi Jinping.

According to Lukashenka, it is not enough to make a car, it is far more important to sell it.

“The competition is very strong. And today the government has been instructed to devise measures to help us sell at least 60,000 cars on the domestic and foreign markets. This is a small number, but 60,000 cars are needed for profitable work and decent salaries,” he said.

The president also promised that import cars used by Belarusian government agencies will be gradually replaced with Geely cars.

“We are thinking of the ways to help people buy these cars. Families need cars. Therefore, it is essential to find ways to support you. I think we will find good variants. The document will be signed in the near future. We are mulling over various options, including deferred payment loans and leasing,” he added.
