Hundreds of Belarusians receive humanitarian visas and ask for political asylum in Lithuania

As many as 347 Belarusians have arrived in Lithuania on humanitarian grounds, announced the head of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, Rustamas Liubajevas, DELFI informs.

“During the period from August to 20 December, 347 Belarusian citizens arrived at the territory of the Republic of Lithuania on special humanitarian grounds with the permission of the Minister of Internal Affairs, 74 Belarusians applied for political asylum,” said the head of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania. According to the service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lithuania, over the past week, another 40 Belarusians arrived on the same grounds, 2 people applied for political asylum.

Rustamas Liubajevas said that the number of Belarusians who arrived in Poland and those who asked for asylum there is twice as high as in Lithuania, that is, 606 Belarusians arrived in Poland, and 127 people asked for political asylum.

A new wave of emigration from Belarus began after the presidential elections on August 9, 2020.
