Sergei Mikhailov, a former deputy head of the Information Security Centre of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), and Ruslan Stoyanov, a former employee of the Kaspersky Lab company, have been sentenced to 22 years and 14 years of imprisonment for high treason.

The two convict will serve their terms in medium-security penal colonies. Mikhailov also got a fine of 400,000 Russian rubles (nearly $6,100), Stoyanov – a fine of 150,000 Russian rubles (appr. $2,300). Mikhailov was also deprived of the rank of reserve colonel and state decorations.

Mikhailov and Stoyanov were arrested at the end of 2016; the first media reports appeared in January, 2017. The both were accused of selling information about actions against Pavel Vrublevski, the founder of ChronoPay company, for $10mln in the year of 2011. This information concerned the methods of conducting operational and investigative measures against Vrublevsky.

However, it is not clear what remuneration they received in practice. No money was found after the detention, the Russian newspaper Kommersant said.

Mikhailov was part of the top brass of the FSB Information Security Centre; he informally defined the policy of the cybersecurity sector. Stoyanov was Head of the Cybercrime Investigation Department at Kaspersky Lab. According to media reports, the department cooperated with the FSB and Russia’s Ministry of Interior over computer crime.

The verdicts were delivered by Moscow District Military Court. The trial took place behind closed doors, the investigation was classified.
