Freedom Day: Brest activists set to celebrate centenary of Belarus independence proclamation

Zmitser Shymanski, Head of the regional branch of the Belarusian People’s Front, has submitted an application for organising a feast on the occasion of Freedom Day.

According to Shymanski, Brest authorities informally agreed to their holding the festival 100 Years of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR).

The organizing committee includes 16 members – representatives of political parties, public associations, volunteers and local businessmen.

“We are preparing a real feast – there will be a concert, prizes from our partners, meeting with Belarusian artisans and NGOs, positive emotions and festive symbols,” Shymanski told belsat.eu.

Any help will be welcome, he said.

“We invite anyone who consider March, 25 to be a festive day to join the organisers. One can become a volunteer and gain experience of organisational work. Or you can donate some money for making the symbols of the festival. And if you run a Belarusian business, you can present your company at one of the venues,” the activist added.

March 25, 2018 will be the 100th anniversary of the proclamation of the Belarusian People’s Republic. It came into existence at the end of the First World War, when Bolshevik forces left Minsk and the city was occupied by German troops. On March 25, 1918 the Provisional Government (Rada) proclaimed the independence of the BNR. After the Red Army re-entered Minsk, the Communist government replaced the Rada; its members had to emigrate.
