Photo of the day: Russian soldier dies in Syria

Contract soldier Vadim Kostenko has died in Syria. Ministry of Defense said that the man committed suicide, but his parents do not believe it.

This is the first confirmed death of the Russian soldier since the beginning of the Russian military action in Syria. The first person to write about it was blogger Ruslan Leviev.

The Ministry of Defense announced that Vadim Kostenko, who was 19 years old, had committed suicide. But parents do not agree with that version of events. They told Reuters that they spoke with their son on the phone on the day of his death.

“He was energetic and cheerful, he was laughing,” said the soldier’s mother Svetlana Kostenko.

The father of Alexander Kostenko does not believe in suicide either:

“We were told that he had hanged himself because of a girl. He would never do that. I know my son.”
