Former political prisoner gets another jail term

On Monday, a Minsk court has sentenced opposition politician Mikalai Statkevich to 15 days of administrative arrest, human rights centre Viasna reports.

The politician was not taken to court; the trial was heard via Skype. Statkevich was found guilty of violating the rules of holding mass events (Art. 23.34 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). The decision was delivered by judge Tatsyana Motyl.

It is the second arrest in a row; Mikalai Statkevich has been in custody since May, 31.

On that day, the former political prisoner was rounded up by plainclothes men when he was going to a picket to collect signatures for wannabe presidential candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya. On June 1, Statkevich was punished with administrative detention (15 days in custody).
