On December 15 Stanislau Shushkevich, a former Chairman of the Supreme Soviet and one of three that put an end to the USSR, marks his 81st birthday.

Unfortunately, the birthday person failed to answer the phone today. “He went to Moscow to a book presentation,” his relative told Belsat.eu.

Mr Shushkevich is a nuclear physicist. Before entering politics, he trained 33 PhDs.

Until recently, in accordance with the special ordinance of incumbent president Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the monthly pension of the former leader of Belarus was meager (due to the inflation in Belarus its amount once reached $ 0.2 in dollar terms). Shushkevich earned his living by delivering lectures at universities around the world. He told students about where ‘Belarus was going’. In his opinion, our country is still moving towards ‘the rule of law’ in spite of the policy of the current government and Russia’s influence.

As Chairman of the Supreme Soviet, Stanislau Shushkevich insisted on removing nuclear weaponry from Belarus.

“I was in favour for immediate removing nuclear weapons from the territory of Belarus, without preconditions and compensations. I explained everything to the Supreme Council, they agreed and made a decision. The fact that it was a threat to the Belarusian nation, as well as for the Belarusian state,” he said.

Belsat TV heartily congratulates Mr Shushkevich and wishes him health, luck and happiness.

“For me Belsat TV is a window on a forward-looking Belarus, on its forward-looking society. It is a source of good information. I want it to broadcast 24/7,” he said in 2014.
