First-ever meeting between Pope, Russian Orthodox patriarch

The first ever meeting of the leaders of the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches is to take place in Cuba next week. Pope Francis is expected to make a stop in Cuba on his way to Mexico. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia will be on an official visit there.

A joint declaration will be signed on the future relations between the Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church, the Vatican Radio reported.

Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill will meet at José Martí International Airport in Havana on February 12, said the chairman of the department for external church relations, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

“Persecution of Christians will be the key topic at the meeting,” he added.
