242-day defense of Donetsk Airport: Ukrainians abandon ruins of new terminal


Ukrainian ‘cyborgs’, famous for their high courage, has left their stronghold. The defense lasted for 242 days from May 26, 2014 to Jan. 22, 2015.

All buildings that could be used as defense strongholds for the Ukrainian soldiers were completely destroyed during the battle for the airport in Donetsk Censor.net Chief Editor Yury Butusov wrote on Facebook.  

“The airport turned into direct fire engagement area, but the last surviving defenders left the ruins of the new terminal building only todayWe must pay tribute to the memory of heroes who had defended the airport in absolutely unfavorable and difficult conditions for so long. We are grateful to those who survived the hell of the last days of defense but remained faithful to the oath and military duty until the end. We are grateful to those who were injured and lest we forget all those who remained in the new terminal forever…’ he said.

The fierce fighting for Donetsk Airport continued as of 9 a.m. on Thursday, says a report posted on the Ukrainian Defense Ministry website.

“A part of airport buildings and premises remain under control of Ukrainian servicemen. The fighting around the airport went on as of 9 a.m. on January 22,” the report said.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, six servicemen were killed, 16 were injured and afterwards taken prisoner by the unrecognised Donetsk people’s republic and 20 left the devastated terminals on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s Aidar special regiment said earlier on Thursday that Ukrainian servicemen had had to retreat from their positions at the Donetsk airport. “The heroic defense lasted for 242 days, which is more than that of Moscow and Stalingras during the Great Patriotic War,” the report says.
