Belarus will remain a reliable and faithful friend of Cuba, President Alyaksandr Lukashenka said during Wednesday’s meeting with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez in Minsk.
It is the first time that Bermudez has come to Belarus as the head of state; in 2016, he visited the country serving as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Cuba.
According to Lukashenka, he has been monitoring the developments in Cuba for the past 25 years.
“I was very familiar with Fidel Castro. I cherish good memories of meetings and talks with him. I often say that he is an example to many other country leaders. That was an outstanding personality. I am very familiar with Raul [Castro], I know you well, too,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.
The country’s conducting sweeping economic and political reforms has not gone unnoticed in Belarus, Lukashenka stressed. The Belarusians do wish every success to a ‘revolutionary and courageous’ Cuba, he added.
In turn, Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez stated that his choosing Belarus as the first foreign destination after being elected President shows the importance and priority of cooperation with the country.
“I am also conveying warm and bear hugs from Army General Raul Castro to you,” said Bermudes.
