Extradition looming: Big businessman from Belarus arrested in Berlin


Belarusian businessman Yury Avyaryanau, who was put on the international wanted list, has been recently detained in Germany.

“In October of 2017, a package of documents cocerning the extradition of the citizen. On January 18 he was arrested; on January 21 a Berlin district court approved the detention for the purpose of extradition,” Dzmitry Bryliou, a representative of Belarus’ Prosecutor General Office, told TUT.BY.

According to him, the German side launched extradition proceedings to prevent Avyaryanau from fleeing from law enforcement agencies. The procuracy employee did not specify when the businessman would be delivered to Belarus.

Last year, the Investigative Committee took up the criminal case against Yury Avyatyanau and a number of heads of big private companies over alleged tax evasion by business entities. Soon security forces arrested six top managers working for Avyaryanau. The businessman, who managed to leave Belarus, was put on the international wanted list.
