Economist Gitanas Nauseda elected president of Lithuania


Economist Gitanas Nauseda is a landslide winner in the runoff vote in Lithuania. The voter turnout was 53.43%.

Gitanas Nauseda, a former member of the board of the Bank of Lithuania, holds liberal views in economy; he is not linked to any political party.

According to preliminary results, Nauseda won the race with 65.86% of the votes against Conservative party candidate Ingrida Simonyte‘s 32.86%. Simonyte has already congratulated Nauseda on his victory, LRT reports.

Nauseda thanked his team and the people of Lithuania for their supporting him.

“I hope we will make Lithuania more beautiful and harmonious together,” he said.

In the first round of the Lithuanian presidential elections on May 12, 31.16% of voters cast their ballots for Gitanas Nauseda who trailed only MP Ingrida Simonyte (31.35%). Incumbent Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis became a third-largest player (19.86%).
