Easier way to citizenship for foreign volunteers defending Ukraine

Ukraine has eased the procedure of granting the country’s citizenship to foreign volunteer fighters, Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk said on Twitter on December, 27.

“The government of Ukraine has simplified the procedure of acquiring citizenship by volunteers of foreign nationality who defended Ukraine in the east,” he said.

According to Oleksiy Honcharuk, they approved the mechanism for obtaining a temporary residence permit in Ukraine, which is the first step to being admitted to citizenship.

In June 2019, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada passed the law ‘On amendments to some laws of Ukraine concerning the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons who participated in the defense of the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine’. 230 deputies voted for adopting the law.

The law allows foreign volunteers to get the citizenship of Ukraine and prevent their being extradited to ‘unfriendly countries’.
