Early voting in Belarus: Human rights defenders warn against violations

Human rights activists urge Belarusians to report cases of compulsory early voting to independent election observers.

The election to the local councils of deputies is scheduled for February, 18. More than 18,000 deputies of local councils are to be elected in Belarus af about 22,200 candidates.

The corresponding appeal has been posted on the website of the Human Rights Centre Viasna.

“In view of the start of early voting in the elections to local councils of deputies of the 28th convocation, human rights activists remind that administrations of educational institutions, enterprises, etc are not authorized to organize the electoral process. Participating in the elections is the exclusive right of a voter, and nobody has the right to control where, when and how they will vote,” the appeal says.

Early voting has kicked off on Tuesday. Belarusians who will not be able to cast their ballots on the E-day stand the chance to support their candidates on February, 13-17.
