EAEU: Belarus critical of law on installing Russian software on gadgets

Three Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states, including Belarus, failed to back the law providing the pre-installation of Russian-made programs and applications on gadgets, the newspaper Vedomosti reports.

The sides were discussing the law as far back as December 13 at the meeting of the domestic markets department of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The representatives of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan believe that the Russian amendments may limit the turnover of highly sophisticated products from other EAEU countries to Russia and obstruct the functioning of the Union’s internal market.

The Commission is studying the opinions; there has not been a conclusion on the law’s potentially being a threat to EAEU member states’ trade, the EEC press service reports.

On November 5, the Russian State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill prohibiting the sale of smartphones and computers that do not have Russia-made software installed.
