Monument to 'polite people' doused in paint in Crimea

The man threw red paint on a bronze monument to unmarked soldiers in the center of Simferopol. He was later detained by the police.

A criminal case for vandalism was launched against the man. He faces a fine, correctional work or arrest for up to three months.

The term “polite people” became popular during the annexation of Crimea. It is how the military units of the Russian special forces, who were present on the peninsula in military uniform without identification marks were labelled.

In 2015, State Duma deputies even proposed to create a new holiday – the Day of Polite People. In their opinion, October 7 — the birthday of Vladimir Putin — would be the right day for this holiday.
