Donetsk separatists sentence journo to 15 years in jail

The so-called Donetsk People’s Republic has sentenced Ukrainian journalist Stanislav Aseyev to 15 years in prison over alleged spying.

The investigation into his case was conducted by the local ‘Ministry of State Security’. In August, the separatist court found Aseyev guilty of espionage, public calls to extremist activity and violation of the territorial integrity. He will serve the 15-year term in a maximum security penal colony.

Aseyev is a contributor to the Ukrainian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Ukrainska Pravda and the newspaper Mirror of The Week. He was one of the few journalists in Donetsk who continued to work in the city after it passed into the control of pro-Russian militants. He published his articles under the pseudonym of Stanislav Vasin.

In the spring of 2017, Stanislav Aseyev disappeared. Later, it became known that he was arrested by separatists. International human rights organizations and media workers are demanding his release.
