Donbas: Belarus citizen calling on locals to join separatists


The image of the former Belarusian special forces soldier Sergei Savich appeared on a billboard in the territory of the unrecognised Donetsk republic.

There is also a call to local residents to join the ranks of militants on the billboard. 25-year-old Sergei Savich, a citizen of Belarus, became the spokesmodel of the campaign.

Savich, whose call sign is Bely (White), is known to went to war on the side of Russia-backed separatists in June 2014. He served in Sparta division, became a platoon commander, participated in the battles at Donetsk airport and near Debaltseve.

In February 2015, he said that he decided to go to Donbas after he had watched the Russian TV news item about the ‘crucified boy’. Later, a lot of influential sources and persons presented a strong case that the story was fake.

Now Savich lives in Donetsk region. It is unknown whether he visits Belarus or whether he has been put on a wanted list over mercenarism.
