Donbas becoming one of most mine-affected regions of the world

UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ursula Mueller issued a statement about Donbas. The text is published on the website of the organization.

“Eastern Ukraine is faced with the security problem. It is fast becoming one of the most mine-affected regions in the world, which, if the problem is not solved, will stop in development for many years. Mine clearance and risk communication are needed in all conflict-affected areas, especially along the line of contact, including checkpoints on the de facto border,” said Ursula Mueller, who recently returned from Donbas.

She also added that currently about 4 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian assistance, this particularly applies to residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Since the start of hostilities, at least 2,500 civilians have been killed and 9 thousand people injured, the statement of the UN representative says.
