Diplomat to Lukashenka: Belarus customs officers’ manners deter big investors

Ambassador of Belarus to China Kiryl Rudy reported cases of the excessive customs control to president Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

“A respectable lady – the president of China’s largest tourism corporation – arrived in Minsk. She was met at the ramp as a VIP and then taken to a separate room. She had to spend there 40 minutes. Her personal belonging were shaken out; every note in her wallet was counted, all the files in her computer were double-checked. Two months later, a journalist working group came to Belarus at her commission. Again, their main impression of the country was going through passport and customs control for hours. And it was a VIP channel!” Rudy stressed.

“I absolutely agree with you you. All your recommendations will be taken into account and proper decisions will be made,” Lukashenka promised.

Last year 122 mln Chinese tourists travelled the world. 20,000 of them visited Belarus.

U.S. charge d’affaires Robert Riley said in early June that Belarus should improve its image in the world to attract long-time investment. A few days ago, the Dutch envoy to Poland and Belarus told Belsat TV that diplomatic contacts were not enough to attract foreign investors. According to him, in order to create a friendly business environment, Belarus should establish the-rule-of-law system and guarantee its further existence.
