On August 26, OMON dispersed Minskers protesting against the rigging of the presidential elections. Acoording to human rights centre Viasna, at least 17 people were detained.

More than 1,500 persons gathered in front of House of Government on Wednesday evening. Speaking through megaphones, the police urged them to leave. When OMON forces were pulled in to the streets adjacent to Independence Square, they started grabbing people.

As some protesters were trying to hide in Red Church, riot policemen blocked its doors and about 100 people got trapped there. A bit later, OMON moved away from the building, which gave protesters and believers the chance to get out.

Catholic bishops have condemned the security forces’ actions on the Red Church premises.
