If the authorities want shows or guests from Europe, they should let political prisoners go – that is the opinion shared by 9 protesters that come to Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk on Tuesday.
On February 26, the activists demanded release of political prisoners before the start of the European Games in Belarus. But some of them faced the deprivation of liberty themselves. Artsyom Charnyak and Volha Nikalaichyk were grabbed soon after the action of solidarity.
“They were attacked by security forces of Belarus. They were actually kidnapped. And only a few hours later their relatives got to know that they were taken to the predetention centre in Akrestsin street. The same thing happened to Pavel Sevyarynets,” Vital Rymasheuski, a co-chairman of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, told Belsat.
Not everyone was able to join the picket: former political prisoner Pavel Sevyarynets, anarchists Nasta Huseva and Zmitser Paliyenka were preventively detained. Some days ago, Pavel Sevyarynets announced a campaign for Svyataslau Baranovich.
On Wednesday, the police came for another protester – Leanid Kulakou, an activist of the European Belarus.
“He was taken from home, they came several times and threatened to smash down the door,” activist Maya Naumava said.
To make Kulakou leave the apartment, the police cut off electricity.
“Of course, the government have its fears. The European Games are loomig; there will be many foreigners, representatives of foreign media. And apparently, they do not need such publicity,” Chairman of the Young Front Dzyanis Urbanovich said.
