Alyaksandr Lukashenka has approved a new defense plan of Belarus and the Concept for the Construction and Development of the Armed Forces until 2030, which the Security Council approved at the recent meeting in the Independence Palace, the press service of the President reports.
State Secretary of the Security Council Stanislau Zas told reporters that the new defense plan of Belarus focuses on strategic deterrence of the enemy.
“In the defense plan, the emphasis is placed on preventing the unleashing of aggression, strategic deterrence. It is paid more attention to than in the previous plan, documents on strategic deterrence have been developed. More attention has been paid to the issues of destabilization of the situation in the country — these are also defense issues. This is the reality of our time, faced throughout the world: everything starts with destabilization of the situation in the country and provoking of an internal armed conflict,” BelTA quoted Zas.
Zas said that Belarus would increase spending on defense.
“Everything has been calculated. We are able to ensure the military security of our country, based on the capabilities that we have,” said the Secretary of State. “We will steadily increase defense spending. This should be done, if we set a goal to qualitatively increase the capacity of the Armed Forces”.
It is planned that defense spending will grow up to 1.5% of GDP in ten years.
At the moment, according to various estimates, Belarus spends 1 to 1.27% of GDP on defense annually.
As for the Concept for the Construction and Development of the Armed Forces until 2030, the emphasis is placed on preserving the existing composition and structure of the army, its qualitative development through better combat training, re-equipment and modernization of the technical component.
