CSTO members fail to select new Secretary General in Astana

The decision to appoint a new CSTO Secretary General was postponed until the next meeting of the presidents, to be held in December in St. Petersburg.

The President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, told BelTA about this at the summit in Astana.

“We had a problem, because the representative of Armenia Khachaturov, who held the post of general secretary, was recalled. This is up to the Armenian side. And in accordance with the charter and alphabet, Belarus is next,” the Kazakh leader noted.

According to him, Armenia would like to appoint its new representative for the remaining period.

“But all the heads of state said that one year remains. He (the new potential candidate from Armenia for the post of Secretary General) will not have time to go round even these countries. Therefore, we need a normal acting general secretary. The next one is from the Belarusian side,” said Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The final decision will be made on December 6 at a meeting of presidents in St. Petersburg.
