Crimea: Blast in college in Kerch, casualties reported


An explosion has occurred in a polytechnic college in Crimea’s Kerch on Wednesday afternoon.

“The blast occurred this afternoon. There are deaths and injuries,” state-run news agency TASS reports with reference to its own source.

The blast was caused by an unidentified explosive device, the agency cites the National Anti-Terrorism Committee. According to preliminary data, 18 people were killed and another 70 were wounded. More than 20 people have been hospitalized, the city ambulance service says. Students are among most victims of the blast.

Bomb disposal experts from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) are working at the scene and an investigation is underway.

(UPD) The suspect in Wednesday’s bomb explosion shot himself; he was one of the college students, Sergei Aksyonov, head of the Russian administration in Crimea, said. According to local official Igor Mikhailichenko, the man opened fire soon after the explosion.
