Coronavirus will have to be controlled for another 12-18 months, WHO mission claims

On April 10th , representatives of the mission of the World Health Organization visited Vitsebsk region and met with the Chairman of Vitsebsk Regional Executive Committee Mikalai Sharstniou, newspaper Vitsbichy writes.

Commenting on China’s success in combating coronavirus, Patrick O’Connor of the WHO European Office warned against the premature weakening of quarantine measures and urged to be careful.

“We believe that at both the global and country levels, governments need to be prepared for the virus to spread for 12-18 months. It is quite possible that during this time effective vaccines will be developed, but we must constantly take care not to overload the health system, keep in place all other barrier measures. A possible second wave of infection is being reported from some Asian countries. Therefore, while we remain optimistic, we also need to remain cautious. This is not a short distance race. This is a long marathon,” he said.

According to Vitsebskiya Vestki region chairman of Executive Committee Mikalai Sharstniou, the first coronavirus patients in the region were identified in February, when a group of light industry specialists arrived from Italy, where they had visited an exhibition.

At the moment, this region is in second place after Minsk in terms of the number of infected with COVID-19. As of April 9, the region had the highest number of deaths – 7.
