Contract looming: Belarus to supply Azerbaijan with ‘military equipment’

A contract for weaponry supplies will be signed soon, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev said when completing his visit to Minsk on Monday.

“The military and technical sphere is one of the avenues of our cooperation. We are very pleased with it, the products have the highest quality and usefulness. It is no accident that the military and technical cooperation between our countries has already had a good record, fairly large volumes and a tendency to expand. It is no coincidence that today, among the documents signed, there is a memorandum which will be very soon transformed into a contract for our purchasing another batch of military equipment from Belarus,” news agency azertag.az quotes Aliyev.

The Azerbaijani leader failed to specify which types of equipment he was talking about. On November 19, Azerbaijan`s Minister of Defense Zakir Hasanov and Chairman of the State Military Industrial Committee of Belarus Raman Halouchanka signed “The Memorandum of Understanding on the development of mutually beneficial cooperation between the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the State Military Industrial Committee of the Republic of Belarus in the field of supply of air defense weapons and equipment”.

Aliyev also thanked the Belarusian authorities for their position on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The joint statement highlights key points and says that this conflict should be resolved in accordance with international law, in the framework of territorial integrity, inviolability of borders of Azerbaijan in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. We are grateful to Belarus for such an impartial stance on the issue which is extremely important to us and the entire region,” he added.

This year, Belarus sold its newest Polonez rocket system to Azerbaijan, which has drawn great disfavour from Armenia, Azerbaijan’s rival in the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. It should be noted that both Belarus and Armenia are allies and members of the CSTO.

Yerevan also criticizes Minsk for the breach of etiquette: Alyaksandr Lukashenka told Ilham Aliyev about would-be electing a new Secretary General of the CSTO and gave details of the closed doors talks. Moreover, last week he shared his doubts about Armenia’s ability to live up to the current tasks with the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Belarus.
