Composer and teacher, People’s Artist of Belarus Ihar Luchanok has died at 80. Earlier, on November 2, he was hospitalized with a stroke.
The news came from his friend Heorhi Suraunioy, who wrote about it on Facebook.
Ihar Luchanok wrote the cantatas “Mound” based on the poems of Yanka Kupala and “Soldier’s Heart”, “Unknown Soldier” and “Stars Over Pine Trees”; poem “Huslyar”, vocal-symphonic poem “War Not Needed”, a cycle of songs “Oh, Parents’ Motherland” based on poems by Vincent Dunin-Marcinkiewicz, Maxim Tank and Nil Hilevich; the songs “Memory of the Heart”, “My Native Land”, “Cranes Fly to Palessie”, “Heritage”, “Alesya”, “Veranika”, “Verasy’,”Khatyn”,” If Stones Could Speak,” “Letter from 1945″,”May Waltz”,”While There Is Love On Earth” and others.
Lyrics to his music were performed by ensembles “Pesnyary”, “Syabry”, “Verasy” as well as popular Russian singers. He also created music for feature films and plays.
He headed the Belarusian Union of Composers, in 1982-1986 he was rector of the Belarusian State Conservatory. In the 1980s he was a deputy of the BSSR Supreme Soviet, and later of the USSR Supreme Soviet.
