Close to European Games: Drones, ‘unauthorized events’ out of Lukashenka’s favour


Additional safety measures will be introduced in the Belarusian capital and Minsk region on June, 17 – July, 2 in view of hosting of the 2nd European Games.

The corresponding decree signed by president Alyaksandr Lukashenka (No 191) has been published on the National Legal Internet Portal on May, 21.

The decree provides for a ban on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles and model airplanes at competition venues and guests’s and participants’ accommodation areas. However, state bodies and agencies are still allowed to use drones for ‘purposes related to the 2nd European Games’. Any violator will be stripped of their drone until July 2, when the ban period expires.

The document also make provisions for the allocation of special lanes; involving military into the protection of public order; authorizing security guards in hotels to carry out personal searches; blocking websites with calls for participating in ‘unauthorized mass events’.

The 2nd European Games will be held in Minsk in June 21-30, 2019. For the first time it took place in 2015 in Baku; it was started rolling by Lukashenka’s close friend, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, who definitely wants it to run and run. However, holding the event may cost Belarusians $30-40 mln.
