Christian Democrats refuse to support any candidate for election

Due to the lack of free and fair elections, as well as the fragmentation of the opposition, the party Belarusian Christian Democracy has decided not to nominate a candidate and not to support any of them during the election campaign in 2015. This decision was made by the delegates of the constituent congress of the party on June 13 in Minsk.

“If there is no single candidate from the democratic forces, we will not nominate our own candidate or publicly support someone. For us, the campaign prepared by Lukashenka and Yarmoshyna is not electoral but political. We will carry out a campaign of solidarity with Mikalai Statkevich and all political prisoners,” said the co-chairman of the BCD Pavel Sevyarynets.

Another co-chairman, Vital Rymasheuski, said that the BCD is not discaliming responsibility for the fact that the opposition failed to agree on the nomination of a single candidate. “We believe it is our defeat,” he said.

Mr Rymasheuski stressed that the BCD has contenders worthy of presidential candidates. “But we will not nominate our own candidate in conditions where Mikalai Statkevich, Andrei Sannikau and other candidates for election in 2015 cannot be elected,” he said.

At the same time, to defend the rights of Belarusians to free and fair elections, the BCD participates in the observation campaign Right of Choice, which aims at determining the real voter turnout and detecting fraud and coercion.

Mr Sevyarynets also said that the BCD “prepares to take power in their hands”, although now it cannot be done.

Currently, the intent to participate in the 2015 presidential election was expressed by seven potential candidates: Alena Anisim, Syarhei Haydukevich, Syarhei Kalyakin, Tatstsiana Karatkevich, Anatol Lyabedzka, Anatol Lyaukovich, Yury Shulhan.

On June 9, the chairwoman of the Central Election Commission, Lidziya Yarmoshyna said that the CEC proposes to hold the elections on October 11.
