Change.org petition urges IMF not to give loan to Belarus

Authors of the petition demand cessation of all negotiations and consultations between the IMF and the government of Belarus until the release of all peaceful demonstrators detained for protests against the decree #3.

More than two thousand people have signed an appeal not to fund current authorities of Belarus. The petition is available at the change.org in Belarusian, Russian and English.

In his commentary to belsat.eu, Dzyanis Kazakevich, one of the petition creators, writes that the financial maintenance of the Lukashenka’s regime from outside became of interest for many. Because of the low efficiency, another loan from the IMF (if there is one) will lead to a deterioration of the economic situation in the country, he added.

Minsk is in talks about a new IMF loan of about $3 billion under 2.3% for 10 years. On December 20th, in an interview with Reuters, Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kabyakou said that negotiations were constructive, but there were two complex sets of issues — changes in utility tariffs and improving the performance of the state sector of the economy.
