A Moscow court found former Economic Development Minister Alexei Ulyukayev guilty of accepting bribes.

He was sentenced to 8 years in a maximum-security penal colony. In addition, Ulyukayev got a penalty in the amount of bribes, i.e. 130 mln Russian rubles.

The prosecution demanded a 10-year prison term for the former minister.

After delivering the verdict, the convict was handcuffed and taken to the cage. Until that moment the former minister had been under house arrest.

Alexei Ulyukayev was accused of taking bribes of 2 mln dollars in cash from Igor Sechin, Executive Chairman of Rosneft, the Russian state oil company. Sechin is rumoured to be a close ally and counselor of Vladimir Putin. According to the prosecutors, Ulyukayev receives bribe money for providing the ministry’s approval of the deal on Rosneft’s purchasing shares of Bashneft company. Ulyukayev keeps pleading not guilty and blames Sechin for making a ‘provocation’.
